School Council at Bygrove

We believe that a school that serves pupils needs to listen to & respond to those pupils & more importantly to give them the power to do things & make changes.

School council has been running for several years now & with the help of committed staff has taken great strides in developing pupil voice through the whole school. We have now forged links with some of the school councils in our partner schools in the Poplar Partnership (altogether we call ourselves the Poplar Parliament) & look forward to links with our brand new partner school in Livingstone, Zambia!

Each year in January we hold elections for a school council. The candidates who wish to take part write the speech they will use to canvas support in assembly. All of the children listen and decide who will take the roles. We then vote for who we think will do the best job.

“Being in school council is a big responsibility; we take ideas from our class and bring them to our meetings. Our chairperson makes sure we all get to say our ideas.

“In the past year we have worked extremely hard to make changes to things we have thought about. We have raised money for a rock climbing wall, we have questioned our class to get ideas of favourite books and now we are beginning to set up a healthy tuck shop.

“I love being in school council because it’s a wonderful experience and you get to work with other people from the school that you wouldn’t even dream of working with.”

(Anisha Year 6, Vice chairperson)
