The Bygrove Governing Body is a board of 9 members who represent different parts of the school community and who all bring different skills to the task of leading this outstanding school forward.

  • 2 Staff Governors one of whom is the headteacher. The other staff governor is elected by the school staff team. Staff governors represent the views of staff at Bygrove at governing body meetings.
  • 4 Community Governors who are appointed by the governing body to represent the local community. These governors are selected for the skills they bring to the Governing Body.
  • 1 Local Authority (LA) Governors who are appointed by the LA which maintains the school. They do not work for the LA but are people who live or work locally and are interested in supporting a local school.
  • 2 Parent Governors who are voted onto the governing body by other parents of children who attend the school. Parent governors play an important role in shaping the education and experience of their children at Bygrove.

Who are we?

Stuart Poyser ~ Chair of governors

I live in Tower Hamlets and became involved with Bygrove in 2009 when I joined the Number Partners scheme. The quality of the teaching and the enthusiasm of the children made me want to get more involved so I became a governor in 2010.

Ramakrishnan Venkatakrishna ~ Vice-chair of governors

I work as an Investment manager for Citi Private Bank. I have enjoyed visiting Bygrove every week since 2002 firstly as a Number Partner and then I started the Chess Partners scheme which has been running successfully since 2004. I have been on the Governing Body since 2008.

Nathalie Lockton ~ Chair of Resources Committee

I work as a senior analyst at Morgan Stanley. I first became involved with Bygrove a couple of years ago when I became a Reading Partner. I have enjoyed volunteering ever since and love how keen the children are and how much they improve over the course of the year. I became a governor in late September last year. I am a South Londoner and live in Peckham.

Salma Mahbub ~ Member of the Pupil Achievement Committee

I have been a governor of Bygrove for a number of years. Through those years I have been fortunate to be part of the Bygrove journey in becoming the outstanding school it is today. I am very privileged to work with the Bygrove Staff who are professional and approachable at all times and are passionate about teaching our children to reach their maximum potential. I look forward to seeing the other parents every day to chat and keep in touch. As a governor I find this is an excellent opportunity to connect with fellow parents and carers.

Rasheda Chowdhury ~ Parent governor and member of the Pupil Achievement Committee

I work as a Respiratory Physiologist within the NHS.  As a Parent Governor for Bygrove Primary School, I am a strong believer in becoming involved in the school that my children attend and education on the whole. I believe education is a very important factor for children's development and future prospects and as a Governor I can support this, through meetings with parents and staff.

Sujatha Kandasamy ~ Parent Governor & member of the Pupil Achievement Committee

As someone who firmly believes that a school is not just educating the children of today but the leaders of tomorrow I would like to play an effective role to support a school that provides everything from PE to Science clubs and is actively involved in the wider community.

Combined with my enthusiasm, commitment and interest in the education system, I would listen openly to your thoughts and ideas, as to how collectively we could further enhance the environment in which the children are raised in order to help them gain positive self-esteem, creativity and develop leadership traits.

Sarah Pinnington ~ Staff Governor and member of the Pupil Achievement Committee

I have worked at Bygrove for 2 years.  My position on the Governing body will ensure that I will represent the Bygrove staff and that they are informed about issues being discussed by Governors.

Ruth Brock ~ Chair of Pupil Achievement Committee

I was delighted to become a Bygrove Governor in 2015.  For four years I was a teacher at Stebon Primary working for Jo & Jeremy and I was inspired by their commitment to providing an outstanding education and their exceptionally high standards.  Poplar has a very special place in my heart.  My day job is Chief Executive of the Shakespeare Schools Foundation which uses Shakespeare to transform lives (look out for Bygrove children performing Shakespeare every autumn!).  I'm excited to help Bygrove continue to grow and be a beacon for educational excellence.

Jo Franklin & Jeremy Iver ~ Headteachers and together 1 staff governor! Jo sits on the Resources Committee and Jeremy sits on the Pupil Achievement Committee

 Jeremy ~ Headteacher

This is my 10th year as co-headteacher of Bygrove Primary School but I have spent the whole of my teaching career since qualifying in 1997 in Tower Hamlets, working in 4 schools. I feel a close bond with the children & families in this particular part of Poplar & love working in such an amazing school. One of the reasons I feel we have been able to achieve so much here is because of the courage, commitment & sheer hard work of our governing body. It has been a privilege to work alongside such a team. I sit on the Pupil Achievement Committee.

Jo ~ Headteacher

I have been a headteacher at Bygrove Primary School since 2003 and I love my job! I am proud of each and every one of the children who come to this school and will settle for nothing but the very best for them and their families. I enjoy working closely with the schools ambitious and forward thinking Governing Body to ensure that Bygrove keeps on getting better and I sit on the Resources Committee.

What do we do?

As governors we make collective decisions as part of the Governing Body. Our main purpose is to help raise the educational standards and performance of Bygrove by supporting the work of the Headteachers and school staff. We ensure that the school runs effectively, that quality teaching and learning is happening across the school, that the budget is spent wisely and that Bygrove provides good value for money.

We make strategic decisions on how the school is run and are answerable to parents, the wider community and most importantly the children who attend Bygrove. We govern rather than manage giving direction and focus. The management of the school remains the responsibility of the Headteachers. We are responsible for:

  • Appointing Headteachers and Deputy Headteachers and ensuring the implementation of a range of HR procedures
  • Managing the school's budget
  • Determining aims, policies and priorities for Bygrove
  • Monitoring and evaluating the work of the school and setting targets
  • Ensuring high levels of attendance and good standards of pupil behaviour
  • Ensuring that all children in the schools have access to a broad and balanced curriculum, suitable to age, aptitude and ability, which prepares them for adult life
  • Ensuring the health and safety of pupils and staff

We meet 6 times annually, once each half term. In addition to these full Governing Body meetings our committees also meet each half term. The committees are Resources and Pupil Achievement and they are made up of a minimum of 3 Governors. The committee members discuss items in depth and make recommendations to the full Governing Body.
